Walking into your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class can feel intimidating. You might be wondering what to wear, whether you'll be thrown around by experienced practitioners, or if you're even athletic enough to try BJJ. If you're searching for your first BJJ class in St Petersburg, we want you to know that these feelings are completely normal, and we're here to make your introduction to jiu jitsu as welcoming as possible.
At Juan Reppin Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we've welcomed hundreds of complete beginners through our doors. Here's exactly what you can expect at your first class.
What to Wear to Your First BJJ Class
For your first class, you don't need any special equipment. Simply wear comfortable athletic clothing like:
A t-shirt or rash guard (avoid shirts with zippers or buttons)
Athletic shorts or sweatpants (no pockets or belt loops that can catch fingers)
No shoes needed - BJJ is practiced barefoot on the mats
If you decide to continue training, you'll eventually want to get a gi (the traditional uniform), but we have loaner gis available for your first few classes.
What Happens During a Typical BJJ Class
A typical adult fundamentals class at our St Petersburg BJJ academy lasts about 60 minutes and follows this structure:
Warm-Up (10-15 minutes)
We start with light jogging, stretching, and BJJ-specific movements like shrimping and bridging. Don't worry if these movements feel awkward at first - everyone starts somewhere, and these will become second nature with practice.
Technique Instruction (25-30 minutes)
The instructor will demonstrate 2-3 techniques, breaking them down step by step. You'll then pair up with a partner to practice. For beginners, we always pair you with an experienced student who can guide you through the movements safely.
Live Training/Rolling (15-20 minutes)
As a first-timer, you'll likely observe the sparring portion or do light positional drilling. We never throw beginners into live sparring on their first day. Safety and building a solid foundation come first.
Common First-Class Concerns (And Why You Shouldn't Worry)
"I'm not in shape"
BJJ is one of the best workouts you'll ever do, and it gets you in shape - you don't need to be in shape to start. We have students of all fitness levels, ages, and body types. The beautiful thing about jiu jitsu is that technique beats strength, making it accessible to everyone.
"I'm afraid of getting hurt"
Safety is our top priority. Our instructors are trained to create a controlled environment, and our experienced students know how to work with beginners gently. BJJ is actually one of the safer martial arts because there's no striking, and you can tap out anytime you feel uncomfortable.
"I'll look stupid"
Every single person on the mat, including our black belts, was once a complete beginner who felt awkward and confused. The BJJ community is incredibly supportive because we all remember that feeling. You'll be welcomed, not judged.
